چکیده

The advance in targeted observations of tropical cyclone movement is reviewed in this article. The targeted observations from DOTSTAR (Dropwindsonde Observations for Typhoon Surveillance near the Taiwan Region) in understanding and improving the tropical cyclone track predictability is highlighted, along with the progress of the field program of THORPEX-PARC in the summer of 2008. The impact of the dropwindsinde data from DOTSTAR has been demonstrated. A specific targeted method (Adjoint-Derived Sensitivity Steering Vector) for tropical cyclone motion has been proposed. Intercomparison of all targeted observation guidance products for western North Pacific typhoons have also been conducted.

Damaging sediment density flows triggered by tropical cyclones

10 The global network of subsea fibre-optic cables plays a critical role in the world economy and is 11 considered as strategic infrastructure for many nations. Sediment density flows have caused 12 significant disruption to this network in the recent past. These cable breaks represent the only 13 means to actively monitor such flows over large oceanic regions. Here, we use a global cable break...

Overshooting convection in tropical cyclones

[1] Using infrared satellite imagery, best-track data, and reanalysis data, tropical cyclones are shown to contain a disproportionate amount of the deepest convection in the tropics. Although tropical cyclones account for only 7% of the deep convection in the tropics, they account for about 15% of the deep convection with cloud-top temperatures below the monthly averaged tropopause temperature ...

Observational Evidence for Oceanic Controls on Hurricane Intensity

The influence of oceanic changes on tropical cyclone activity is investigated using observational estimates of sea surface temperature (SST), air–sea fluxes, and ocean subsurface thermal structure during the period 1998– 2007. SST conditions are examined before, during, and after the passage of tropical cyclones, through Lagrangian composites along cyclone tracks across all ocean basins, with p...

Impacts of Different Grades of Tropical Cyclones on Infectious Diarrhea in Guangdong, 2005-2011

OBJECTIVE Guangdong province is one of the most vulnerable provinces to tropical cyclones in China. Most prior studies concentrated on the relationship between tropical cyclones and injuries and mortality. This study aimed to explore the impacts of different grades of tropical cyclones on infectious diarrhea incidence in Guangdong province, from 2005 to 2011. METHODS Mann-Whitney U test was f...
